About the project

Since 09/2020 IN:EX is part of the BordEUr research network. This recently launched network of nine universities addresses the impact of recent developments in the EU's and its member states' bordering practices, how these practices are framed, and how the assigned meanings potentially clash with the EU's identity as an international actor. The project is coordinated by the Center for European Neighborhood Studies (CENS) at the Central European University (CEU).

IN:EX will specifically study the development of Austrian border policies since the country's accession to the European Union and the Schengen Area starting from 1995. Particular attention will be given to the impact of two recent events, namely the political crisis of migration governance in 2015 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020/2021.

  • Tagung in Nordmazedonien (Skopje und Ohrid). 16-19 Juni, 2022.
  • Seminar "Grenzpolitik: Von Schengen bis zur Balkanroute"
    • Im Sommersemester 2022 wurde von Sieglinde Rosenberger und Ivan Josipovic ein Seminar zum Thema "Grenzpolitik" am Institut für Politikwissenschaft angeboten. In dem Seminar werden politische Maßnahmen und Akteure zur Regulierung grenzüberschreitender Mobilität und Migration diskutiert. Die österreichische Grenzpolitik wird dabei im Kontext des europäischen Raums der Freiheit, Sicherheit und des Rechts gedacht, dessen Kern der Schengener Grenzkodex darstellt.
  • IPW Lecture Steffen Mau
    • Am 25. November 2021 wurde von Steffen Mau (Humboldt-Universität Berlin) im Rahmen der IPW-Lectures ein Gastvortrag mit dem Titel "Sortiermaschinen. Die Neuerfindung der Grenze im 21. Jahrhundert" gehalten. Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit der Metamorphose staatlicher Grenzen und Formen der Grenzkontrolle im 21. Jahrhundert. Es fragt: Wie verändert sich unter Bedingungen von Globalisierung, internationaler Verflechtung, neuer Abgrenzung und Konflikthaftigkeit die Art und Weise, wie Staaten ihre Grenzen markieren und sichern, wie sie Durchlässigkeit und Abschließung verbinden? Der Vortrag zeigt, wie die Sortiermaschine Grenze heute wirksam wird und welche neuen Ungleichheiten dadurch entstehen.
